Education and Healthy Top 10
In my role as a teacher, I continue to realize the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle for two main reasons. First, I need a lot of energy when working with young people. I teach better when I feel better. Second, I want to set good examples for my students and want them to live a healthy life.
In the last few years I have made it a goal to improve my overall health. While I do not claim to be a doctor, here is my personal top ten list for living a healthy life.
10) Health begins with education. Read some books. Do your best to sort through the truths and distortions. Listen to your own body.
9) Limit drinks to water, tea, and occasional fruit juice. There is absolutely no nutritional value to soda!
8) Try to eat the following every day: whole grains, fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, and beans. Meat is bad for my body and environment.
7) Exercise and/or yoga is essential and should be done at least 3 times a week. It provides a natural high.
6) Attending live concerts/cultural events really gives my brain and emotions a healthy workout.
5) Much of our eating is visual and not based on actual hunger. Thirst can be mistaken for hunger. Portion control is a must!
4) Stress management is important. Living at work is not healthy. (This one can be tough for teachers)
3) Donating time or money to worthy causes can improve overall health.
2) Nobody is perfect. If you make a mistake, don't give up.
1) You must take care of yourself before you can truly take care of others.
